Tom---Your entry on Indian Removal spurred this discussion of John Freeman Schermerhorn, who was, more than any one else, responsible for the forced removal of the Cherokee from the East Coast.
Schermerhorn, who was from Schenactady, New York, was a…
Ron---I also have a way of working canal-era thinking into my philosphy every so often. I have, for instance, coined a term for those who are mentally challenged---"Their wicket gate isn't fully closed!"
I also long for the days when there were the…
I have fond rememberances of my father taking me to the Burnett's Creek Culvert along the W and E Towpath around Lockport, Indiana. My father infected me with canal mania by continuously talking about the trips he and my mother would take to Metamora for both boat and train rides. My father, you see, was both a transportation buff as well as an equestrian enthusiast, being devoted to any form of transportation.

Although I am a Board Member of the Carroll County Wabash-Erie Canal and heartily endorse all that we do to promote canal lore, I really like Terry Pepper's site with all the data on it.
Tell us about any research you've done or materials you've collected
I was the researcher for the booklet Faces Behind the Facade, IOOF Cemetery Walk, genealogy work on the Case, Schermerhorn, Pigman, McCain, Hubbard, and Harley families. I have also served as a resource for two educational projects with both the late Susan Feller and Cecily Schneider. I am currently performing an inventory of downtown area buildings in Delphi, Indiana, many of which are canal-era related and constructed by canal merchants. As a new IOOF member at Lodge # 28, Delphi, Indiana, I am performing an inventory of their archives, many of which were amassed during the Canal Era in Delphi and surrounding areas.

Before you sent me an email, I new nothing of the Wabash and Erie Canal Park. Thanks for sending the link. I will have to ask my Aunt in West Lafayette, IN, who has been a fifth grade teacher there for over 30 years, has not said anything about it to me. Surely you must have had grade school field trips to your park? How long has the Park been a 501(c)(3)?
Thanks for the opportunity to continue my reading. I found additional info about the construction of lock gates today, so maybe I will be able to complete my manuscript.
