Engines of the Wabash Erie

When railroads first came to the Wabash Valley, many steam rail engines were brought in by Wabash Erie Canal boats unwittingly delivering the instrument of the canal's demise.  However, about the same time in 1854, a news item from the Logansport Journal announced that, "during the last week in August a second Fire Engine arrived via the canal boat "Silver Bell."  It was dubbed the "Tipton," and described by the reporter as a side-stroke, hand-pumper fire engine, with 5-1/2 inch cylinders, and…See More

Hi, thanks for the reply. The bridge crosses the Tippecanoe, not the Wabash. Tim.

As I understand it, that was the reason. There was originally a ford there called "Case's Ford" after John Stilwell Case, who owned a farm there. If the name Case sounds familiar, it should. Jack as he was called was married to Jennie…

Larry: great question. I don't know the answer to your question, but I do not believe that the landing per se was at the Canal Center. Once the canal came to Delphi, it was considered a disappointment for citizens and business people that the…

How did Bicycle Bridge get its name?

Hi,I've been researching how Bicycle Bridge got its name.  One of the stories I found relates it to being a joke due to the narrow bridge built over the Tippecanoe wide enough only for bicycles.Do you have any information on this? Thanks,Tim.See More

Where was the original W&E Canal landing in Delphi?

I assume there was a landing (with dock?) somewhere along the original W&E canal where it passed through Delphi, for passenger and freight embarking/disembarking.Does the current W&E Canal Park include the site of that original Delphi landing?Larry PyleSee More

Wasn't the connection with the East Coast grand? We had a family(the Schermerhorns) who came from Schenectady. The next time you are at the Center go in to my research facility and pull out an interview with Edmund Travers Spotswood about his…

Mark Alan Smith replied to Tom Castaldi's discussion 'Where did we get the word Hoggee for a Mule Driver?'
Tom--I have read(although I don't know where) that the term came from the two directions a horse(or mule) can go---HAW(left--I think) or GEE--right). I would suppose that the controversality of this term is as extant as the source of the term…

Dave Sorry I have missed any conversation about the potential ACS tour in Delphi (2011). Too many things going on around here I guess. The Schmidts and I have conversed and they are good spokesmen for whatever comes of the ACS event. I look forward…

Canal metaphors resonate today

When I was giving stump speeches all over the state for the new Indiana State Museum from 1997 to 2004, I frequently worked a couple of canal metaphors into my presentation -- thanks to the perspective and passion of my board members Dan McCain and Tom Castaldi.

It's pretty common for historians to attribute part of the "conservative" Hoosier character to the "failure" of the Internal Improvement Act, the subsequent ban on state borrowing in the 1850 Constitution -- we've had a risk-averse… Continue
